Secret Sight Words

Reading intervention

How is it made?

Different cards are made, each with a picture that corresponds with a letter. The letter that is to be written is the first letter of what the picture is (for example, for "Owl", "O" is written). From the pictures, a sight word is spelt! Laminate each card so that a white board marker can be used, and easily erased.

This activity can be adapted based on the words that individual children may be struggling with.

Turn it into a game!

You can hide a few cards around the room (if available). For every code the child can find, crack, AND pronounce correctly, they get a point!

Encourage!

Encourage children to skip a picture if they are not sure what letter it starts with, and see if they can fill in the letter based on the other pictures.

Observe the child's tendencies. Do they used upper case and lower case letters, or a mix of the two? Do they sound the word out loud? Are the words they figure out quickly, ones they have seen in the classroom? Maybe on a word wall?
