Exploring Fall Colours

Cooperative Play
Observing
Use of Descriptive language to explain, explore and extend

This activity emerged after the classroom teacher bought a pumpkin earlier that week in preparation for Halloween. The goal was to specifically observe fall colours and that is why gourds were chosen. Other object and colours can also be used for this activity.

Aside from the colour association, the gourds added a sensory element in which children explore the bumpy and smooth surfaces of the different gourds along with their unique shapes.

How was it made?

I bought the gourds from a local grocery store in October. I placed 5 of them in the sensory bin along with one miniature pumpkin.

Colour swatches can then be picked up from a local paint or hardware store.

With a single hole puncher, I created a hole on the end of each colour on the swatch so that the children can place the gourds behind the swatch and compare the colour on the swatch to their colour of the gourd.
